Amplifier- an amplifier is used to boost a weak television or radio signal. Generally they are powered which means they will need to be connected to the mains - either wired in or using a normal plug

Booster - signal amplifier/booster. In some weak or poor signal area's, an installed aerial may not output the enough adequate signal to receive trouble free reception. In these cases, a booster may be required

CAT5 - category 5 is the standard type of cabling used for Ethernet networking. It's also used in patch panels and office cabling as it can carry both voice and data with ease

Coax coupler - used to join together 2 coax plugs

Coax plug - terminates coaxial cable for insertion to TV etc.

Coaxial cable - aerial lead to appliance

Combiner - combines two or more aerial leads into one single aerial (coaxial) lead

DAB - digital audio broadcast

DAB aerial - enhances DAB reception

Db -decibel, signal measurement

DAB Radio - Stereo Digital Radio offering a wide range of channels, as an alternative to FM

Digital aerial - aerial/antenna capable of receiving the new digital signal, providing more channels and enhanced services for the UK

F connector - terminates coaxial cable for insertion to appliance

FM aerial - boosts FM radio reception

FM - stereo analogue radio reception, alternative to DAB, but cannot receive all radio signals

Freesat - a new non subscription digital satellite system from BBC & ITV, featuring over 80 digital channels. Broadcast in HD with no subscription required. The Freesat service was also the first to boast free high definition channels, and free recording via Freesat PVR set top box.

Freeview - a service that provides digital television through an aerial. The service is 'free to air' which means that viewers do not need to subscribe to watch the broadcasts. Another alternative is Freesat.

Full HD - term used to describe a HD-ready TV that can accept 1080p signals, and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (this means it can show 1080i and 1080p pictures, without shrinking the picture)

Ghosting - repeat image(s) on analogue TV sets, caused by a reflected signal

HD Ready - HD Ready is a badge that appears on the front of many TV'S and essentially it means that the TV can display high definition or Hi-Def content.

HDMI cable - an HDMI cable is necessary if you want to connect HD equipment to your HD television. This HDMI cable looks quite similar to a USB cable, except it's a dedicated interface for transmitting audio/visual signals. Often if you're experiencing poor HD performance, a cheap HDMI cable can be the cause

High-gain aerial - multi-element aerial that utilizes 32 elements, or more

LCD TV - Liquid Crystal Display. Today, LCD televisions are becoming the norm as they're affordable, economical and with High definition content, they really do look fantastic. The great thing about a LCD television is that because they're essentially just a flat panel which can be wall mounted

LNB (quad) - this is a dish mounted device, which converts Sky signals to send the reception through to multiple (2 - 4) Sky boxes via the Coaxial (Aerial) cable

LNB (quattro) - this is a dish mounted device, which converts Sky signals to send the reception through to multiple switches

LNB (single) - this is a dish mounted device, which converts Sky signals to send the reception through to a single Sky box via the Coaxial (Aerial) cable

Magic eye - device which the Sky box can be controlled from another room

Multi-switch - one Sky dish receives the signal for multiple Sky boxes, usually used in apartment buildings & hotels

Plasma TV - type of flat panel where tiny gas cells emit ultraviolet light that strikes red, green and blue spots on screen to make a picture

PVR - a Programmable Video Recorder is a digital television hard-disk recorder. You programme it using an on-screen display of TV listings which makes it much easier to use than a video recorder

RF input - connects to your aerial and allows the broadcast signal to be received by your tuner

Set top box - usually a Sky box, Freeview box, DVD player or VCR

Scart - all-purpose 21 pin socket to connect equipment such as DVD players and VCRs to your TV. Most TVs now come with at least two Scart sockets.
Scart sockets - two Scart sockets give you more versatility. The first connects to the TV and carries the higher quality RGB signal and widescreen switching information that tells your telly when to switch between conventional and widescreen formats. The second Scart socket links to your recorder (video or DVD) - ideally this should carry RGB too, though often it doesn't

Sky Digital - Sky digital satellite system providing access to hundreds of digital channels and a vast range of pay to view movies, interactive services and radio stations.

Sky - Magic Eye - a Magic eye is a way for you to control your Sky box from anywhere within your home. While this lets you change channels from virtually anywhere, it doesn't let you watch multiple channels at once.

Sky - Multi Room - Sky Multi room is a service that Sky offer allowing you to view different channels in different rooms of your home. All you need for this service is a set top box per room and to pay the additional subscription fee.

Sky+ - Sky digital with recording facilities. Provides the viewer to control what they watch by pausing, rewinding and playing live TV! You can also record and watch two channels at the same time.

Sky HD - brings a new home viewing experience, providing images in much greater detail and vibrant colours, complete with full recording facilities as Sky+. HD Compatible TV & Subscription required to take full advantage of a Sky HD system.

Splitter - splits signal to two or more TV's

Subwoofer - dedicated speaker for providing bass frequencies
